Unfortunately, there are regularly food poisoning outbreaks associated with a wide range of fresh produce crops, recently Listeria on sweetcorn, Salmonella on Galia Melons, E coli 0157 on lettuce to name but a few.

The key to ensuring safe crop production is to identify the main areas of potential contamination, and then develop and implement appropriate mitigation strategies to reduce or eliminate these risks.

This training course will aim to develop attendees understanding and knowledge in these areas, to allow them to use their skills to practically identify and manage contamination risk in real world situations, in a wide range of crop production situations.

Key areas covered:
Micro Food Pathogens Risks

  • Introduction to microbial food safety including recent issues and trends

  • Background to sources of microorganism in fresh produce and risk management

  • Overview of specific microorganisms of interest in fresh produce

  • Customer and legislative standards

  • Strengths and weaknesses of certification standards

Breakout sessions throughout the day to cover practical aspects of mitigating risks within fresh produce

  • Field risk assessments

  • Crop categories and intrinsic risks

  • Manure and grazing

Key risk areas in crop production Water/Manure/People

  • Managing contamination risks

  • Animal and Animal Manures

  • Water sources and risk assessment

  • Managing water use risk post harvest

  • Water treatment - what systems, how they operate and effectively managing them in a field situation
