EU adopt new regulation limiting use of Trans Fats

New EU Trans Fat level set at 2g/100g fat.

On the 24th April 2019, the EU adopted a new regulation that strictly limits the amount of industrially produced trans fat in all foods sold to EU consumers.

Trans fats are usually found in processed foods as “partially hydrogenated oils”. Trans fats are created in an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid.

Eating trans fats increases the risk of developing heart disease and stroke and is associated with type 2 diabetes.

Many everyday foods contain industrial trans fats, much of which people are completely unaware of. Foods such as crackers, biscuits, cakes and other baked goods contain levels of trans fats which should be eaten in moderation whilst adopting a healthy and balanced diet.

The new regulation limits the amount of industrially produced trans fats in all food sold to EU consumers.  All foods must comply with the new Regulation by 2nd April 2021.
